Australian Jewellery Designers

Being a Australian jewelry designer is one of the most interesting and challenging jobs. Like most designers, it requires continuous creativity, limitless passion to create, a lot of attentions to details and outstanding presentation. On top of that, you need to have the ability to present your materials in a beautiful and unique way.

There a several materials you could use for your designs. Popular materials include clay, gemstones, pearls, crystals, etc. You need to learn about your materials and understand them. It is easy to present beautiful things, while some of the materials are comparatively ordinary. That is the interesting part of the job – creation and presentation. How are you going to turn something ordinary into fine-looking pieces that carry strong characteristics? How are you going to create strong characteristics for those ordinary materials and give new lives to them by putting them into new designs?

If you have a lot of ideas, that is good. Try out every of your ideas and turn them into actual creations, because you never know which turn out well, which don’t. It is also important to look back at your previous creations and think, are they good enough? Is there any modification I could make? You will also need feedback from others.

Sometimes you will get lost. You are lacking ideas and feeling like you have reached the bottleneck. At this stage you need inspirations and there are tons of ways to find them. Checking out other designers’ work, Exploring what are being sold by famous brands, keeping up with the trends, paying extra attention to the craftsmanship in every piece and visiting art gallery would be useful for inspirations. Sometimes you may be inspired by your old designs. Even browsing on the Internet would help because there are too many beautiful things we have not seen and are waiting to be discovered. It is also helpful to find a way that you are comfortable with to keep your inspirations in records, so you can look back at them anytime. And most importantly, you need to have an open mind to learn and absorb, and be appreciative.

Aforementioned is the design part of the job, now we need to get down to the business. Setting a goal is the first thing you would need to do. Decide whether you are doing it for fun as an amateur designer, hoping to make money from that, or starting your own brand. There are lots to be considered: How big is your ambition? What is your target market? How are you producing the pieces? Where do you want to sell your designs? Make a business plan carefully and thoroughly and kick down the questions one by one. You might find starting and running a business harder than designing – that’s what make the job challenging.
